“Snow”
“God sends the snow that is white like wool.” Psalm 147
“Snow is falling outside, and all is peaceful and still. In such moments it is possible to believe that the world could still be good.” Richard Evans
Winter has come to the Rockies. Spring had peeked through for a brief time with warming sunshine that resulted in rivulets finding their way to the rivers that would quench the thirst of those living below. Friday it was warm enough to take a hike but Saturday morning a awakened to the silence of a new snowfall. Winter had made an encore appearance.
It was a divine invitation to set aside the plans I had made for the day and sit in early morning silence, peering out the window at overcast skies that were salting the earth with white granules of frozen water. The trees were flocked, giving the impression that God had spent the night decorating, getting ready for Christmas.
The blanket covering the earth urged me to do nothing other than relish the soothing calm. So that is what I did. I sat with my cup of tea, peering out the frosty window, and allowed myself to be caught up in the magic of the moment. It was like Christmas. And so I played “A Cozy Christmas” on my Spotify. Surrendering to the scene, I allowed myself to soak up God’s gift delivered in nature. Heart, soul, and mind became one with the holy atmosphere, and like a child I wondered at the magic of it all.
Winter, Christmas, Snow. What a holy Trinity! Meant not to be viewed or admired from a distance, but participated in. This Trinity is not a spectator sport. One fails to fully appreciate these gifts if one doesn’t immerse themselves fully into them. Kind of like God, I guess.
And so, after a time I abandoned my post next to the window and began to get bundled up. I was called to leave the cozy comfort of the house and enter into full communion with the cold and snow. And that is what I did.
There is no spiritual lesson in this. Nothing that I want to invite you to consider, except perhaps to fully enjoy the opportunities we are given in this life to enjoy the gifts God gives us in this beautiful creation. Have a lovely and loving week.
